We're delighted to announce the Fall 2017 Reading & Lecture Series! There's a ton to look forward to -- mark your calendars now:
We’ll enjoy poetry readings featuring Reginald Dwayne Betts (August 31), Jorie Graham (September 7), Layli Long Soldier and Timothy Yu (November 2); readings and conversation from Martín Espada, Odilia Galván Rodríguez, and Mari Herreras (October 12); a gallery talk by Giancarlo Huapaya (September 19); and prose readings from Joy Williams (September 14), Rubén Martínez, and Charles Yu (November 9).
Our fall resident, Aimee Nezhukumatathil, will present both a reading (September 29) and a craft talk (October 5) as part of her extended stay in Tucson. Aimee is the author of four books of poetry, including the forthcoming OCEANIC (Copper Canyon, 2018), is and the poetry editor of Orion magazine.
We’re also hosting the 2017 Thinking Its Presence Conference at the UA Poetry Center, which will be in town from Thursday, October 19—Saturday, October 21. Headed by Prageeta Sharma, with an amazing board of directors, this conference will be visiting Tucson in its third iteration, having previously been held in Missoula, Montana. The theme for the 2017 conference is The Ephemeral Archive, and the keynotes will be Douglas Kearney & Val Jeanty, Trish Salah, and Roberto Tejada. We hope you’ll visit this page for more information on this conference, and register here (by 8/15 to enjoy the pre-registration rates)!
In addition to this Tucson programming we will also offer two readings in Phoenix as part of our ongoing partnership with the Phoenix Art Museum: on Friday, 11/3, Layli Long Soldier & Timothy Yu will read together, and on Friday, 12/1, Joy Harjo, Rita Dove, & Sandra Cisneros will visit Phoenix to read from their own poetry, as well as to celebrate the longstanding conversation across and between their deeply impactful work.
We’re grateful, as always, to our partners and collaborators in this season. Layli Long Soldier’s and Timothy Yu’s visit to Tucson is under the umbrella of the Morgan Lucas Schuldt Memorial Reading, presented in honor of Morgan’s legacy in Tucson and beyond. Reginald Dwayne Betts will be here as a partnership with the American Friends Service Committee and the UA College of Social & Behavioral Sciences. Our academic year residencies, this fall featuring Aimee Nezhukumatathil, are supported by Amazon Literary Partnerships. We’re grateful for the support of the UA Office of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, College of Humanities, College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Africana Studies Program, Office of Diversity and Inclusive Excellence, Confluencenter for Creative Inquiry, and Department of English in helping us bring the 2017 Thinking Its Presence conference to Tucson. And, as always, the UA Prose Series is presented with curation and support from the UA College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and the UA Creative Writing Department. Our programming in Phoenix is presented in partnership with the Phoenix Art Museum, with lead sponsor the Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing, and additional support from the Creative Writing Program at Arizona State University, the Literary and Prologue Society of the Southwest, and Superstition Review. Deep thanks are due, too, to the National Endowment of the Arts, as well as the Poetry Center Whitman Circle as well as Friends of the Poetry Center for their support of the 2017-18 Reading & Lecture Series.
So much gratitude to our co-sponsors, and to you and you and you for coming to hear these remarkable poets. We hope to see you this fall at the Poetry Center!
